A cold house and an unresponsive thermostat can make it tempting to keep resetting the furnace. Start by identifying what is happening: does nothing run, does the fan move room-temperature air, or does the equipment begin a cycle and stop? This guide focuses on residential gas furnaces. Heat pumps, boilers and electric furnaces have different operating sequences; identify your equipment before applying advice.
Stop troubleshooting for a gas odor or suspected leak. Get everyone outside, avoid switches and phones inside, and call 911 and your gas utility from a safe location. Stay out until emergency personnel say it is safe. See Nicor Gas safety instructions.
If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave immediately and call 911 from outside. CO has no smell, so the absence of a gas odor does not establish safety. Read the CPSC carbon monoxide guidance.
First, confirm that the thermostat is asking for heat
Select Heat mode and set the target above the displayed room temperature. Check whether a schedule, hold or away setting is changing that target. If the display is blank and the thermostat uses homeowner-replaceable batteries, follow its instructions. Do not remove wiring or bridge thermostat terminals.
Record the displayed temperature and any message before changing settings. For example: “Heat is selected, the room is 62°F, the target is 68°F, and no air comes from the vents.” That report separates a no-start complaint from a furnace that runs but does not warm the house. Check the accessible filter and room airflow
A dirty filter can restrict airflow and contribute to overheating shutdowns. With the system off, inspect the homeowner-accessible filter according to the manual. Use the specified filter size and type, and follow the marked airflow direction. Keep return grilles and supply registers clear of rugs, furniture and curtains. If you cannot safely access the filter, leave that step for the service visit.
A higher filter rating is not automatically suitable for every system. Ask which filter your equipment and ductwork support instead of selecting solely by filtration claims. Nicor Gas's filter guidance notes that some high-efficiency filters can restrict airflow in systems not designed for them.
Why the fan may run while the air feels cool
With Fan On selected, the blower can circulate room-temperature air between heating cycles. Fan Auto usually ties fan operation to the heating or cooling cycle, although equipment-specific circulation settings may also apply. A brief startup transition is different from sustained airflow that never becomes warm.
There is also a fault scenario: a furnace may shut its burners down after overheating while keeping the blower running to cool the equipment. Ignition, flame-sensing or control problems can also interrupt heat production. These possibilities require diagnosis; cool air alone does not identify a defective sensor or prove that replacing a switch will solve the problem.

After snow or ice, look at outdoor vent openings
Some high-efficiency furnaces use sidewall intake and exhaust pipes. From a safe ground-level position, look for snow or debris around the openings. Never insert tools into piping, dismantle a vent or climb onto an icy roof. If an opening is blocked, damaged or inaccessible, stop using the furnace and arrange professional help.
Clear venting matters because obstructed openings can interfere with safe exhaust removal. Keep the surrounding area clear as instructed by the equipment manufacturer. Nicor Gas's furnace and venting guidance specifically addresses snow and ice around sidewall vents.
When to stop adjusting and request furnace repair
If heat does not return after the basic thermostat and accessible airflow checks, arrange service. Note repeated start-and-stop attempts, persistent cool airflow, unusual ignition sounds or a visible fault message. Repeated cycling can have multiple causes; the pattern is evidence to report, not a diagnosis to act on.
Do not repeatedly cycle power to erase an error. If a code is visible through a viewing window or on the thermostat, photograph it without removing panels. The meaning depends on the make and model. Tell the technician whether you changed a setting or filter and whether that changed the symptom, even temporarily.
What a useful diagnosis should explain
Ask which observed finding explains the lack of heat and which checks support the proposed repair. Depending on the furnace and symptom, a technician may need to evaluate electrical operation, gas connections, combustion or the heat exchanger. - What failed, and did another condition contribute to the failure?
- What work is necessary now, and what is an optional recommendation?
- What parts, labor and follow-up are included in the estimate?
- How will heating operation be verified after the repair?
- If replacement is proposed, what are the repair alternative and its limitations?
Keep the written findings with your service records. If a safety concern is reported, ask the technician to explain the required next step and whether the equipment must remain off. Do not restart a furnace that a qualified professional has taken out of service pending repair.
While waiting for service
Make access to the furnace clear, secure pets and gather the model information and recent repair history. Tell the scheduler how quickly the indoor temperature is falling and whether anyone in the home needs a warmer location. If the home cannot remain safely warm, arrange a suitable place to wait.
